Hopped into a Grab and zipped over to Batu Caves—because apparently, ride-hailing is the new budget-friendly option for three people. Who knew? Batu Caves, a stunning limestone wonder just 13 km north of KL at Selangor, is home to some breathtaking Hindu temples. We only made it to the main one, dedicated to Murugan (you know, the towering gold statue that you probably thought was a goddess at first glance).
Climbing those 272 steps in the sweltering heat felt like signing up for a surprise cardio session in a sauna. But fear not! The local monkeys were there to cheer us on—and by “cheer us on,” I mean shamelessly eyeing our snacks like tiny, furry pickpockets. Adorable, but also terrifyingly strategic. 🐒
Later, we “cooled off” with a nighttime stroll through Jalan Alor’s outdoor food market. Pro tip: the weather becomes almostbearable after sunset, and the street food? Absolutely worth sweating for. We bought some rambutan (those hairy red balls – in Malay “rambut” means “hairy”) to try for the first time. Pretty delicious! Its taste reminds me a crossover of a longan and a star apple.
