Dec 21, 2024 – Hong Kong, Lantau Island

Went to Lantau Island to see Big Buddha (Tian Tan Buddha) right next to the Po Lin Monastery and Ngong Ping Village (free).

It did not disappoint. As you get up the mountains (either by the cable car or by bus 21 – we took the latter), the view is absolutely breathtaking as the large Buddha statue is 112 ft (34 m) in hight set at the top of the long 268 steps staircase. It is surrounded by six bronze stunning Devas offering flowers, incense, lamp, ointment, fruit, and music to the Buddha representing the Six Perfections of generosity, morality, patience, zeal, meditation, and wisdom. (Source: Wikipedia.) The view from the top is gorgeous with Po Lin Monastery’s orange roof peeking through the mountains.

We then visited gorgeous Po Lin Monastery (free) and strolled very touristy Ngong Ping Village which reminded us a ski village sans snow.

We took a small hike to the viewing point opposite of the Big Buddha from where we could see the 55-km long Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB) into Macau!  It’s simply mesmerizing.
