Jan 18, 2025 – My thoughts on Vietnam – we liked it! đź‘Ś

  1. A Tale of Two Cities: We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Vietnam! Sure, we only explored two major cities, but they left a lasting impression. Our accommodation in Saigon was a dream (thanks to our wonderful host Nguyen)—it felt like a serene sanctuary to recharge after busy days. Bonus: everything was ridiculously cheap, even compared to Thailand. Verdict? Big thumbs up!
  2. Bread Nirvana: Vietnam, oh Vietnam—you had us at sourdough! The only Asian country where we easily found quality bread at every corner, thanks to the French colonial past. And let’s not forget the Banh Mi: baguettes stuffed with savory delights that had us coming back for seconds.
  3. Motorcycle Mayhem: Picture this: no traffic lights, endless motorbikes, and a “walk at your own risk” pedestrian experience. Crossing streets in Vietnam isn’t for the faint-hearted—you just step boldly into traffic and trust the sea of motorbikes to weave around you. Equal parts thrilling and terrifying!
  4. Masked Masses: Masks, masks everywhere! From motorcyclists to street vendors, it seemed most people were covered. Vietnam easily takes the title of Asia’s most mask-wearing nation (after China, I suppose).
  5. Fashionable Elegance: The Ao Dai—Vietnam’s traditional dress—is a masterpiece of elegance and grace. It’s impossible not to admire its beauty and sophistication. Truly stunning!
  6. Sales with a Vengeance: Hanoi welcomed us with a full-on sales assault. From the moment we stepped into the airport, vendors were circling like sharks at the first hint of eye contact. The south, Ho Chi Minh City, was a lot more relaxed in this department.
  7. The Smog Situation: Hanoi was blanketed in smog that smelled unmistakably like smoke. It clung to everything, from our clothes to our hair. Perhaps that explains why so many locals wear masks?
  8. Serious Faces: Unlike the sunny smiles of Thailand, the Vietnamese people seemed a bit more reserved. Whether it’s a legacy of communism or just cultural shyness, it was noticeable. That said, Saigon felt a little more welcoming on the people front.
  9. Street Beats and Pup Treats: Vietnam’s street music was electric—so lively and uplifting, we couldn’t get enough. Loved it! And as if that weren’t enough, we also spotted some of the cutest dogs ever. A pawsitively perfect touch to an unforgettable trip!
  10. Favorite Vietnam Song: https://youtu.be/WwOY1o16T4s – it is so soul-touching! Thank you Lena Martin for introducing me to it!
